One Piece: Does Shanks Already Know the Future and the End of the Story?

Does Shanks know the future in One Piece? It is a huge question, yet several of his choices appear to follow a remarkably precise logic. He is not merely searching for the One Piece, protecting Luffy, or intervening at random. Since Gol D. Roger’s death, Red-Hair Shanks may have been waiting for a specific era: the return of Joy Boy and the great war against the World Government.

This interpretation does not necessarily mean that Shanks sees every event in advance. Instead, through Roger and Laugh Tale, he may know the broad conditions required for victory: waiting for the right moment, protecting certain people, and allowing their destinies to converge when the new era can begin.

Roger’s Secret and Shanks’ Tears

In chapter 968, Shanks questions Roger upon his return from Laugh Tale before bursting into tears. The exact content of their exchange has not been revealed, but the scene takes on particular significance in light of the words Roger later passes on to Whitebeard.

Before surrendering to the Marines, the Pirate King speaks of the Will of D. Whitebeard comes to one certainty: one day, someone will declare war on the entire world, and the One Piece truly exists. Meanwhile, Oden announces that twenty years must pass before the decisive figures emerge and a major war breaks out.

Roger and his crew may therefore have discovered a truth they could not put into action in their own time. They had reached Laugh Tale too early. This idea would explain why the former Roger Pirates, despite possessing vital information, did not immediately take action against the World Government.

Shanks may have understood that events could not be rushed. His mission would not be to defeat Imu alone—an opponent whom even the greatest legends do not seem capable of overthrowing through strength alone—but to prepare for the emergence of the right people at the right time.

The “New Era,” a Central Expression for Shanks

The idea of a new era appears at two particularly important moments. When facing Whitebeard, Shanks explains that he gave up his arm “for the sake of the new era.” Much later in Wano, he confronts Ryokugyu for targeting the young shoots who changed the history of piracy, before once again referring to this new era.

The connection is reinforced by the emphasis placed on the expression in the Japanese text. It may therefore be more than a general phrase about the future: it could refer to a specific concept, the era Joy Boy is meant to bring into being.

The title New Genesis, or “New Era,” associated with Uta, Shanks’ adopted daughter, points in the same direction. Its lyrics evoke the dawn of a new world and a future meant to save the world. Without treating the film’s events as canon, this element can be read as a thematic clue surrounding the idea that Shanks protects the arrival of a new era.

Why Does Shanks Wait for Joy Boy’s Return?

The turning point comes when Shanks sees Luffy’s wanted poster after Wano. Upon seeing Gear 5, he tells Benn Beckman that it is time to go after the One Piece. It is the first time his words no longer center on waiting, but on taking action.

This decision gives new meaning to his behavior. For twenty-four years, Shanks may have waited for Luffy to achieve the awakening tied to the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and thus become the awaited Joy Boy. Once that condition was fulfilled, Laugh Tale and the One Piece would finally become accessible in their ultimate sense.

This hypothesis aligns with the idea developed around Luffy at Elbaf, where his role now goes beyond that of a simple contender for the title of Pirate King. The recent stakes surrounding his Gear 5 and the struggle against Imu are notably central to the confrontation between Luffy, Loki, and Imu.

Luffy and the Sacrifice of an Arm: Protecting the Ideal Candidate

Shanks stole the fruit then known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi from Cipher Pol. If Red-Hair Shanks already knew that the fruit concealed Nika’s awakening, his act was not simply about stealing a rare power: he had taken possession of an element essential to Joy Boy’s return.

Two events then stand out in East Blue. Luffy voices the same dream as Roger, then eats the fruit. For Shanks, the coincidence must have been overwhelming: the boy who speaks the words of his former captain has just consumed the fruit capable of bringing Joy Boy forth.

The sacrifice of his arm consequently takes on another dimension. Shanks saves Luffy, entrusts him with his straw hat, and tells him to return it when he has become a great pirate. This promise may concern more than Luffy’s growth: it points to the moment when he would finally be capable of fully embodying the new era.

Buggy, Loki, and Kaido: Preserving the Pieces of the Puzzle

The theory gives Shanks a role broader than protecting Luffy. At Loguetown, following Roger’s execution, he gives up on immediately setting out for Laugh Tale with Buggy. He says he is not ready, despite the promise they had made to each other. This refusal creates a lasting rift between the two former apprentices.

Yet Buggy is now one of the four men closest to the One Piece. His influence through Cross Guild could weigh heavily in the final war. Shanks may therefore have kept him away from Laugh Tale, not to abandon him for no reason, but because the time to depart had not yet come.

Loki represents another essential piece. Shanks may have tried to stop him from launching an attack on Mary Geoise too early, before capturing him and bringing him back to Elbaf. His imprisonment would prevent the cursed prince from dying before his time while reserving his release for Joy Boy. Luffy’s intervention with Loki would therefore validate this strategy of waiting.

The trail continues with Kaido. At Marineford, Shanks intercepts the Emperor as he is preparing to attack Whitebeard. Kaido, obsessed with Joy Boy and drawn to death, may have been seeking a fatal battle. Holding him back would have kept alive the opponent Luffy needed to defeat in order to reach Nika’s awakening.

Teach, an Enemy Who Must Also Reach the End

Shanks also tries to convince Whitebeard to stop Ace before his confrontation with Marshall D. Teach. His argument is clear: it is still too early. He wants to prevent the clash between the two men, but this wording may also reveal that he knows Teach has a major role to play.

Blackbeard would not be Joy Boy, as Whitebeard’s final words suggest, but he could be indispensable to the collapse of the current order. His path, his opposition to Luffy, and his connection to the One Piece place him among the unavoidable figures of the conclusion.

The prospect of a final confrontation is not based on raw power alone. Developments involving Haki and Imu’s opponents matter as well, as shown by Zoro’s progress toward consciously using Conqueror’s Haki.

Shanks, Guardian of Fate Rather Than Master of the Future

Shanks may not control the future in every detail. His role may be closer to that of a guardian of fate: he knows the broad outline of a possible victory, accepts that some tragedies will occur, and makes sure that the decisive figures survive until the crucial moment.

Luffy, Buggy, Loki, Kaido, and Teach are all, to different degrees, connected to his interventions. The recurring language of waiting, “too early,” and the new era forms the same pattern. When Luffy becomes Joy Boy, Shanks finally believes that the wait is over.

Red-Hair Shanks would therefore be less of a simple rival to Luffy than a man who prepared the ground so that the future foretold by Roger could finally exist. The quest for the One Piece would only truly begin once every piece of the puzzle is in place.

FAQ

Does Shanks know exactly how One Piece ends?

Nothing confirms that he knows every detail of the ending. The theory instead suggests that Roger told him major information about Joy Boy, the necessary waiting period, and the great war to come.

Why did Shanks not pursue the One Piece earlier?

His decision to act after Gear 5 awakened suggests that Joy Boy’s presence is an essential condition. Before Luffy, it would have been too early to reach Laugh Tale’s true objective.

What is the connection between Shanks and the new era?

Shanks uses this expression at key moments, notably after losing his arm and when he protects Wano’s young pirates. It seems to refer to the era Joy Boy must create by overthrowing the current world order.
