Maha Zoldyck: The Mysterious Ancestor Who Fought Netero in Hunter x Hunter

Maha Zoldyck is one of the most fascinating characters in Hunter x Hunter, despite having almost no direct presence in the story. This very small, bald old man is seen only once and does not utter a single word. Yet a statement by Zeno Zoldyck makes him a pivotal figure in the history of the assassin family: Isaac Netero is said to be the only man to have fought Zeno’s grandfather in a duel and survived.

This information places Maha at an astonishing level, but it also raises several questions. What exactly is his connection to Zeno? Is Maha truly the oldest living Zoldyck? And what role could Zigg Zoldyck, who was connected to Netero’s expedition to the Dark Continent, play in this incomplete family history?

Maha Zoldyck’s only appearance in the manga

The Zoldyck family is introduced as a dynasty of assassins whose members remain almost invisible to the public. When Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrive at the family estate, it is explained that the family has ten members at that point: the five children, their parents, the two grandparents, and a great-grandfather. Even a simple photograph of a Zoldyck is said to hold considerable value.

The ancestor in question appears much later, during the Yorknew arc. He is present alongside Illumi and Kalluto near the bodies of the ten Mafia Dons. They had hired Silva and Zeno to eliminate Chrollo Lucilfer. However, Chrollo had acted first by hiring Illumi to kill those same clients.

The Mafia Dons are then manipulated like puppets through Illumi’s needles. Among the Zoldycks visible at that moment is an especially small, bald, silent old man. His identity is not given in the manga’s pages at the time, but the official databook identifies him as Maha Zoldyck.

Is Maha Zeno’s father or grandfather?

The databook initially gives Maha an age of 98, a height of 1.40 meters, and presents him as Zeno’s father. That would make him Killua’s great-grandfather. However, later information from the manga greatly complicates this version.

During the Chimera Ant palace invasion, Zeno takes part in the operation alongside Netero. As the Hunter Association chairman prepares to confront Neferpitou, Zeno refers to his own grandfather. He states that Netero is the only man who fought him one-on-one and is still alive.

The term used clearly refers to a direct confrontation, a genuine fight between two opponents, rather than an assisted battle or a mere assassination contract. More importantly, Zeno does not speak about his father: he speaks about his grandfather.

A family tree shown in the same passage confirms the existence of a generation between Maha and Zeno. Maha stands at the top, followed by an unnamed man, then Zeno. Maha would therefore be the father of this unknown man and Zeno’s grandfather, making him Killua’s great-great-grandfather.

This depiction contradicts the databook’s earlier information. It is nevertheless important because it comes directly from the manga. The unidentified man could be the missing link in the Zoldyck lineage and, according to a widespread theory, he may be Zigg Zoldyck.

The duel between Maha Zoldyck and Isaac Netero

Zeno’s statement does not say that Maha defeated Netero. Rather, it indicates that Netero survived their confrontation and may be the only person ever to have done so. The distinction is essential: it supports the image of a Maha who may have been lethal to everyone who faced him before Netero.

Netero’s level makes this statement especially impressive. The chairman himself explains that, more than half a century earlier, he had been the world’s strongest Nen user. By the time of the Chimera Ant arc, he considers himself to possess only around half of his former power.

Even old and diminished, Netero wields the enormous 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva, an aura statue whose strikes move at exceptional speed. Neferpitou, one of King Meruem’s Royal Guards, can only truly follow his movements by pushing their perception to the limit.

The fight against Maha would therefore have involved a Netero much closer to his prime. Zeno also acknowledges Netero’s historical superiority, even though he is himself a formidable fighter capable of facing Chrollo Lucilfer with notable confidence. The exact hierarchy cannot be established, but Maha clearly belongs to the extremely exclusive circle of powerhouses from the older generation.

An Enhancer within a family of varied profiles

The databook assigns Maha an Enhancement affinity. This Nen category directly improves its user’s physical abilities: strength, endurance, and speed. Nothing in the manga has contradicted this information so far, although databook data should be treated cautiously given the inconsistencies concerning his age and family relationship.

This affinity would set him apart from the other known Zoldycks. Zeno and Killua are associated with Transmutation, Illumi with Manipulation, while Silva is presented as an Emitter. Netero is also an Enhancer. If this information is accurate, the two men shared not only a generation and a legendary duel, but the same Nen category as well.

This idea is a reminder that confrontations in Hunter x Hunter are not based solely on a scale of raw power. Affinities, techniques, and tactical choices are central, much like the power progressions often explored in other shōnen, such as Zoro’s development toward conscious Conqueror’s Haki in One Piece.

Why would Maha have fought Netero?

Two hypotheses could explain this battle. The first is that it was a contract: someone may have paid the Zoldycks to kill Netero. In that case, Maha would have failed to complete a mission that none of his other opponents may have survived long enough to see through.

The second, more speculative hypothesis is that it was a personal challenge between two young fighters known as the strongest of their era. Netero was known for seeking out opponents capable of surpassing him. He may therefore have challenged Maha, or answered a challenge issued by the Zoldyck assassin.

The choice of a word referring to a fight rather than a job may support this second interpretation. There is also a striking element: the relationship between Netero and the Zoldycks appears to have spanned several generations. Netero had known Zeno since childhood, called on him during the operation against Meruem, and traveled to the Dark Continent with a certain Zigg Zoldyck.

Is Zigg Zoldyck Maha’s son?

In the story surrounding Beyond Netero’s expedition, Ging reveals that Netero once secretly traveled to the Dark Continent. He was accompanied by Linne Hors d’Oeuvre and a young Zigg Zoldyck. This journey supposedly did not give Netero what he sought: on the Dark Continent, it would not be a matter of defeating a rival, but simply of surviving.

One theory identifies Zigg as the unnamed man positioned between Maha and Zeno in the family tree. Zigg would then be Maha’s son and Zeno’s father. This possibility creates a logical continuity: Netero would have fought Maha, then grown close enough to his son to travel with him into the world’s most dangerous territory.

This expedition could also be connected to Maha’s longevity. The Dark Continent is home to Nitro Rice, described as the ultimate secret to longevity. Zigg may have wanted to bring it back for his father. However, this remains a theory: nothing confirms Zigg’s exact motivations or what became of him after his journey.

The connection to Ai and Nanika also fuels further questions. Ai is a calamity linked to human desires, while Nanika lives in Alluka’s body. It is therefore tempting to link this presence within the Zoldyck family to an old expedition to the Dark Continent, but the manga has not yet established any direct connection.

A tiny character with immense potential

Maha Zoldyck holds a unique position. He may have fought Netero at a time when Netero was far stronger than he was during his duel with Meruem. He belongs to a deliberately vague branch of the family tree. Finally, he may know secrets connected to Zigg, the Dark Continent, and his family’s deep history.

His frail appearance deliberately contrasts with the weight of his name. As with the great mysteries of manga pop culture, the appeal comes not only from what is shown, but also from what the work leaves off-screen. Discussions about family ties and inherited power also recall those surrounding Mihawk, Zoro, and the conscious awakening of Conqueror’s Haki.

At this stage, Maha remains an almost complete mystery: one appearance, no dialogue, and a past suggested through only a few lines. Yet those few details are enough to make him one of the most formidable and anticipated Zoldycks in Hunter x Hunter.
