One Piece Chapter 1190: Luffy’s Dark Nika Against Imu and Loki on Elbaf

Warning: this article contains spoilers and theories about One Piece chapter 1190.

Chapter 1190 pushes the Elbaf conflict into a new dimension. Scopper Gaban faces Imu directly, Luffy finds himself unable to prevent the sacrifice of a former Roger Pirates member, and Nika may soon reveal its most unsettling side.

The idea of a “Dark Nika” would not necessarily refer to a new transformation comparable to Gear 6. Instead, it could be an alteration of Gear 5, triggered by Luffy’s anger, shame, and determination to protect his companions. At the same time, Loki appears destined to play a decisive role if the battle moves into Elbaf’s underworld.

Scopper Gaban Reminds Luffy of the Price of Becoming Pirate King

At the heart of the chapter, Scopper Gaban wages a fierce battle against Imu Nerona. Presented as the left wing of the Pirate King, he nevertheless emphasizes his age, his exhaustion, and the wounds he is already carrying. Even so, he stands against an opponent whom even the world’s greatest legends do not seem to have been able to defeat.

His role is not limited to fighting. Gaban gives Luffy a harsh lesson: becoming Pirate King is not simply about being the freest man in the world. The person who reaches the top also becomes a target. He draws the ambitions, attacks, and threats of everyone who wants to bring him down.

This idea echoes Roger’s return from Laugh Tale. Once he was named Pirate King, he did not enjoy a peaceful life: pirates and the Marines sought to hunt him down. Gaban therefore pushes Luffy to understand the responsibility that comes with his position as an Emperor. Being free requires the ability to defend that freedom, but also to protect the people drawn into one’s wake.

For Luffy, the sensitive point is obviously his nakama. His training under Rayleigh had already been born from his inability to save his friends. On Elbaf, Gaban confronts him with the same reality: if he does not become stronger and more serious when the situation demands it, his allies will pay the price for his limitations.

Kamudo, Yashio Takeru, and the Power of the “Mountain Eater”

Gaban reveals several impressive techniques. Kamudo appears to take the form of a burst or projection of Conqueror’s Haki, channeled like a weapon capable of cutting and striking Imu. Its name recalls Kamusari, the attack associated with Roger and Shanks, particularly through the shared root connected to the divine.

The chapter also emphasizes his axe-based fighting style. One of his attacks evokes the legs of a praying mantis, a predator able to seize its prey at lightning speed. This imagery gives Gaban a brutal, animalistic dimension while highlighting the precision of his movements.

His epithet, translated as the “Mountain Eater,” also takes on its full meaning. Gaban cuts down an enormous branch of the Adam Tree in order to carry Imu into the underworld. The text linked to this scene stresses the verb “to eat”: he is not merely cutting the tree, but symbolically devouring it.

A technique he used previously, Yaso Takeru, referred to the strength of 80 warriors. This time, Yashio Takeru raises that scale to 8,000 warriors. The change underlines the gap between an already impressive display of power and the magnitude of the danger represented by Imu.

Imu, Onebani, and Gaban’s Lost Arm

Facing Gaban, Imu summons a new blade tied to the ancient kings who took an oath 800 years ago. This sword, called Onebani, is presented as a blade capable of devouring bones. Combined with the hagoromo and serpentine forms closing around Gaban, it ultimately severs his left arm.

The scene establishes a major parallel with Shanks. At the beginning of the story, Red-Hair Shanks lost his left arm to save Luffy. Decades later in the narrative, Gaban likewise loses his while protecting him from Imu. In both cases, a member of Roger’s crew accepts sacrificing a part of himself for the future embodied by Luffy.

The parallel is not insignificant: it turns Luffy’s failure into a personal humiliation. Luffy can accept being hurt or defeated, but he struggles to endure his loved ones being sacrificed in his place. Gaban has provoked him, criticized his weakness, and placed his honor before his responsibilities. That anger could become the driving force behind an immediate change.

The Elbaf battle therefore continues the stakes of chapter 1191, centered on Imu’s demonic form and the potential alliance around Luffy and Loki. The threat is no longer merely physical: it forces the heroes to understand what they must become to overthrow the world order.

Dark Nika: A Black Form Born from Anger?

The Dark Nika theory rests on the hagoromo, the clouds that accompany the awakening of certain Devil Fruits. Luffy’s in Gear 5 is white, as is Yamato’s. Conversely, users linked to the World Government or corrupted powers are associated with black hagoromo: Rob Lucci, the Gorosei, Cerberus, and Imu.

Following this logic, Luffy might not gain a higher form, but temporarily lose control of his power. His white hagoromo would turn black under the weight of his rage and despair. Nika, revered as the god of liberation, also has an image on Elbaf as a god of destruction. That duality could finally manifest through Luffy.

Awakened Zoans provide an important argument. Their own will can take over their users, as the Jailer Beasts of Impel Down demonstrated. An uncontrollable Nika, more violent and destructive, would therefore remain possible without requiring the introduction of an entirely new Gear.

This possibility would not necessarily turn Luffy into a character driven by revenge. Instead, it could lead him to find balance: retaining the freedom, imagination, and strength of Gear 5 while gaining the seriousness needed to protect his own. Luffy would then become capable of mastering both sides of Nika, the liberator and the destroyer.

Loki Against Nika in Elbaf’s Underworld

Loki could be the crucial element needed to bring Luffy back to his senses. A legend speaks of a warrior god armed with the hammer Ragnir, accompanied by Ratatosque, transforming into a dragon to fight the sun god. The image associated with it depicts a black Nika, wearing an unsettling smile, facing this figure linked to Loki.

Elbaf’s prophecy appears to contain two stages: Nika’s arrival during an ice storm while riding Nidhogg, followed by a confrontation between Nika and Nidhogg in the underworld. If Luffy truly falls into a dark state after Gaban’s sacrifice, Loki could in turn descend to confront him.

This confrontation would allow Loki to exist as more than an ally or a weapon. He would become the one who stands against Nika when the sun god becomes dangerous. The underworld, already reached by Gaban and Imu, would then be the natural setting for this prophetic clash.

The story appears to be setting up a general rise in power. Usopp in particular seems able to sense Imu’s Haki with a sensitivity the other Straw Hats do not yet possess. His development could become essential before the end of the Elbaf arc, while Luffy and Loki move toward an alliance that is as necessary as it is unstable. The confrontation announced in chapter 1192, involving Luffy’s Star Gun and Loki against Imu, would logically extend that dynamic.

Why Roger’s Crew Was Waiting for Luffy

Gaban claims to know Joy Boy’s words and identifies Luffy as the person everyone had been waiting for. That statement brings together several elements: Roger and his crew would have arrived too early at Laugh Tale, Oden was awaiting a future twenty years later, the Sea Kings also spoke of an awaited time, and Whitebeard predicted the arrival of a man capable of carrying centuries of history.

According to this reading, Roger’s crew members did not disappear out of indifference after learning the truth. They waited for the right moment and for the person capable of acting. Crocus, Rayleigh, Oden, Gaban, and Shanks would each have been placed along the path leading Luffy toward his future role.

Shanks seems to hold a particular position in this transmission. His interest in Luffy and his behavior after Roger’s return from Laugh Tale support the idea that he knows a crucial part of the future. This possibility is explored further in our analysis: Does Shanks already know the future and the end of the story?

Chapter 1190 does not solve the mystery of Laugh Tale, but it clarifies Luffy’s challenge: having Nika’s form is not enough. He must still become the man capable of declaring war on Imu and the world controlled by the World Government. Gaban loses an arm to remind him that this future must be earned.

FAQ

Is Dark Nika confirmed in One Piece?

No. Dark Nika remains a theory based on Luffy’s anger, the contrast between white and black hagoromo, and Nika’s unsettling depiction in Elbaf’s legends.

Why does Scopper Gaban lose his left arm?

Gaban loses his left arm after Imu attacks him with the Onebani blade. This sacrifice creates a direct parallel with Shanks, who also lost his left arm to save Luffy.

What could Loki’s role be against Luffy?

Loki may have to fight Luffy if Nika loses control in the underworld. This possibility is based on an Elbaf legend associating the sun god with a hammer-wielding warrior and a dragon.

Why was Roger’s crew waiting for Luffy?

The clues suggest that Roger and his companions learned at Laugh Tale that they had arrived too early. They would then have waited for the era when the person capable of fulfilling Joy Boy’s promise would appear.
