One Piece Chapter 1188: Joy Boy, Imu, and the Mystery of the One Piece

Warning: this article contains spoilers for One Piece chapter 1188.

Chapter 1188 turns the clash between Luffy and Imu into a display of overwhelming strength. Despite Gear 5, its absurd transformations, and the imagination that defines his power, Luffy cannot reach the ruler of the world. Imu completely outclasses him and deals him a defeat that is as brutal as it is symbolic.

This fall is not merely a spectacular setback. In One Piece, Luffy’s defeats have always driven his growth. Against Crocodile, Smoker, and Kaido, he faced opponents whose abilities he did not yet understand. The fight against Imu follows the same pattern on a far greater scale: the future Pirate King stands before the world’s hidden master.

A necessary defeat for Luffy to fully become Joy Boy

Imu states that Luffy cannot be Joy Boy, because Joy Boy would not be so weak. The wording is crucial: it is not a statement about the past, but an assumption. Imu does not say that Joy Boy was not that weak; he assumes that Joy Boy would not be that weak.

This nuance supports a major idea: Imu may not truly know Joy Boy’s power. He may have an image, a fear, or indirect knowledge of it, but not necessarily the memory of a direct confrontation. It also recalls Kaido, who judged Luffy incapable of becoming Joy Boy before Luffy defeated him in Wano.

Kaido’s reasoning was clear: Joy Boy would be the one capable of defeating him. The logic appears similar with Imu. To be recognized as Joy Boy, Luffy will have to surpass a power that still overwhelms him. His defeat in chapter 1188 therefore becomes a formative step, rather than a definitive challenge to his status as Nika.

This confrontation extends the questions raised by later chapters about the hidden ruler’s power, particularly in the analysis of Imu’s power and the 19 Ancient Blades.

Imu’s powers: an imitation of Devil Fruits?

The chapter strengthens a theory already supported by Imu’s previous displays. His power, called Omen, appears to let him replicate an impressive range of abilities associated with Devil Fruits.

The environment coming to life evokes Big Mom’s Soru Soru no Mi. The explosions created by his strikes recall the powers of Mr. 5 or Gladius. His change in size brings Sanjuan Wolf to mind, while his arsenal of spears, cannons, and other weapons points to Baby 5’s Buki Buki no Mi. The demonic projectiles from chapter 1182 may recall the bats produced by Gecko Moria.

In chapter 1188, Imu also stretches his arm to strike Luffy after he dodges. This attack directly recalls the hero’s elasticity and certain serpentine movements from Gear 4. Altogether, it gives the impression that Imu does not possess a single isolated ability, but rather a power capable of imitating or materializing several others.

The theoretical implication is enormous: Omen could be connected to what exists at the core of Devil Fruits. Imu could then potentially be linked to their creation, or at least to the force behind how they function. This possibility resonates with the themes of domination, control, and demonic pacts surrounding the ruler of the world.

It should not, however, be mistaken for confirmation. For now, the manga mainly provides visual and narrative parallels. The answer regarding the exact nature of Devil Fruits remains open, including the rarity of abilities such as flight, which Eiichiro Oda has already put into context in his explanation of why flying Devil Fruits are so rare.

Imu’s four swords and the Empty Throne symbol

Imu does not simply unleash overwhelming force: he also materializes several swords. Nemesis, Gram, Stigma, and Beowulf appear in succession as blades bearing names loaded with mythological or religious references.

Nemesis is associated with judgment in Greek mythology. Gram refers to a sword from Norse tradition. Stigma evokes Christ’s stigmata, while Beowulf is presented as the sword of nothingness. These names may reflect the different faces of Imu’s authority: judgment, anger, resentment, and erasure.

Beowulf carries particular significance because it recalls the swords planted around the Empty Throne. The twenty founding kings left their weapons there as a promise that none of them would sit upon the throne. Yet Imu occupies that very forbidden seat. The swords he summons could therefore symbolize his appropriation of the founding rulers’ power.

This interpretation aligns with the idea that Imu may possess twenty distinct blades, each with its own property. The connection between these weapons and the founding alliance of the World Government also remains central in the examination of Imu’s 19 Ancient Blades.

Can Luffy answer Imu with Nika’s weapons?

Luffy’s defeat by a sword could foreshadow an unexpected evolution in his fighting style. So far, Gear 5 has favored visual gags, extravagant transformations, and complete freedom of movement. Luffy readily materializes goggles, paint, or comedic objects, but he has not yet used this imagination with Imu’s cold military efficiency.

The chapter therefore suggests a possible contrast between Imu’s black hagoromo, from which black weapons emerge, and Luffy’s white hagoromo. If the ruler can create blades and shields, could Nika produce a white arsenal? A sword, shield, or spear would fit historical representations of the Sun God.

Such an evolution would carry special meaning in Elbaf, a land associated with the worship of Nika. There, the giants could recognize Luffy not only as a wielder of power, but as the visible incarnation of the god they honor. It would not mean abandoning his imagination, but understanding that it can also become a weapon to protect those close to him.

Luffy’s true strength remains his crew

The chapter recalls a fundamental opposition between Luffy and Imu. The former gathers allies and puts his strength at the service of others. The latter uses others to consolidate his own power. This difference echoes Mihawk’s words at Marineford: Luffy’s ability to draw people to his side is his most dangerous power.

The Straw Hats’ role could therefore be decisive while their captain recovers. Saving Princess Shuri, protecting Luffy and Loki, or fighting the Holy Knights would not be merely secondary goals. Chapter 1171 established that the Holy Knights receive Imu’s power, but that their loss also directly affects the ruler.

The situation creates a cruel weakness for Imu: by distributing his power, he strengthens his soldiers but also leaves himself exposed to their defeats. If Zoro, Sanji, and the others manage to bring down the Holy Knights, Imu could be wounded through them. Where his system relies on “all for me,” Luffy moves forward through a genuine “one for all, all for one.”

Joy Boy, Imu, and the impossible dialogue from 800 years ago

The first page of chapter 1188 brings a troubling detail: Joy Boy’s face becomes more visible. His broad smile strongly resembles Luffy’s, while part of his face remains hidden. The staging thus preserves doubt over a possible scar and, more broadly, Joy Boy’s exact identity.

This opening also shows communication between Joy Boy and Imu through an unknown device. Yet Imu’s wording seems to indicate that they do not know one another directly. Imu calls out without knowing exactly who will answer, and Joy Boy himself asks for the identity of his interlocutor.

The proposed theory is that their exchange may not necessarily connect two people living in the same era. It could be a communication between the present and the future, made possible by an object or mechanism that remains hidden. Laugh Tale could then house a similar device, without physical time travel being required.

Madam Shyarly and the limits of visions of the future

This theory finds support in Madam Shyarly’s role. Her gift of prophecy has foretold several events that came true, but her visions remain imprecise and require interpretation. When she sees a man wearing a straw hat destroy Fish-Man Island, she does not immediately identify Luffy: she first sees a silhouette.

This distinction is crucial. A vision of the future can show a true image without providing every key needed to understand it. The silhouette wearing the straw hat could therefore refer to Joy Boy without Luffy’s identity being explicitly confirmed at that moment.

Imu and Shyarly could thus be two characters confronted with fragments of the future: Shyarly has given up that burden, while Imu may be trapped by a fear born of incomplete visions. The ruler would not fear only the past and Joy Boy’s memory. Above all, he would fear the future embodied by Luffy.

FAQ

Why does Luffy lose to Imu in chapter 1188?

Luffy is overwhelmed by the extent of Imu’s abilities. Gear 5 and its transformations are not enough to reach an opponent who appears able to replicate many effects associated with Devil Fruits and materialize weapons.

Does Imu truly know Joy Boy?

The chapter maintains the uncertainty. Imu’s statement about Joy Boy’s presumed weakness suggests that he does not know his true power with certainty. The dialogue shown at the beginning may even indicate that their past contact was not a physical meeting.

What is the connection between Imu and Madam Shyarly?

No direct connection has been confirmed. The analysis is based on their possible relationship to the future: Shyarly has prophetic visions, while Imu may also have access to fragments of the future, which could explain his fear of Joy Boy.
