One Piece Monsters: Giant Creatures, Impel Down Beasts and Legendary Animals Explained

The world of One Piece is not limited to pirates, Marines, and its many peoples. Its seas, deserts, sky islands, and prisons are also home to extraordinary wildlife: giant animals, artificial creatures, living weapons, and monsters capable of destroying a ship, a city, or even carrying an entire island.

These beings serve widely different purposes. Some are companions or means of transportation, while others are weapons, guards, or natural threats. Here are the most memorable creatures, from the smallest to the most colossal.

Den Den Mushi, Snails Turned into Communication Networks

Den Den Mushi are among the most common creatures in the world. These snails, with the smallest measuring around 5 cm, are used to transmit communications over long distances, much like telephones or radios. They are used by pirates, the World Government, and civilians alike.

Several models exist depending on their intended use. The standard Den Den Mushi allows voice communication, while the Black Den Den Mushi is used to intercept transmissions. Their most striking trait is their ability to reflect their user’s appearance and emotions: an angry speaker will give the snail an angry expression.

They are living beings that must be fed and cared for. Their origin remains uncertain, but they appear to have been domesticated to become an essential everyday tool.

Dangerous Animals of the Islands and Seas

Drum, Alabasta, and Amazon Lily

Drum Island is home to Lapahns, enormous 1.80 m rabbits with thick fur suited to the cold. Highly territorial, they readily attack humans who enter their land. However, they also have a strong sense of community: the Lapahn Boss protects its kind and eventually saves Nami and Sanji from an avalanche. Lapahns also seem to hold a deep hostility toward Wapol, who hunted them.

Drum is also home to the Hiking Bear, a 7 m creature with surprisingly polite behavior. When it encounters travelers, it bows to greet them. On the island, it is considered polite to return the gesture.

In the Alabasta desert, Sandora Lizards can reach 10 m in length. Carnivorous, fast, and covered in durable scales, they pose a serious danger to travelers. Bananawani, gigantic crocodiles with banana-shaped growths on their heads, are likewise formidable predators with highly resilient scales.

Amazon Lily has several creatures used by the Kuja. Bacura, a 4 m panther kept by Boa Sandersonia and Boa Marigold, is released against condemned prisoners in an arena. Kuja warriors also use snake weapons: living snakes that can transform into bows, spears, or staffs. Their effectiveness relies on the close bond between the fighters and these intelligent animals, which can obey their commands.

Predators of the Sea Routes

Panda Sharks, recognizable by their black-and-white pattern, swim in the waters around Loguetown. Despite their unusual appearance, they are aggressive and attack ships, swimmers, and fishermen alike.

Fighting Fish, which combine fish and bull-like traits, can grow up to 15 m long. They leap out of the water and strike with their tails or horns. Their aggression makes them prime opponents for battles at Dressrosa’s Corrida Colosseum, but also a real danger to vessels near Green Bit.

Near Little Garden, the goldfish known as the Island Eater reaches around 700 m. Its size is such that it can swallow entire islands. Its presence gives an idea of the absurd scale that wildlife can reach on the Grand Line.

The 25 m Dream Koi of Wano are less hostile. Their strength allows them to pull ships and climb the dangerous waterfalls leading to the Land of Wano. This ability echoes the Japanese myth of a carp climbing a waterfall to become a dragon.

Impel Down, a Prison Filled with Monsters

Level 2 of Impel Down, the Beast Hell, turns wildlife into a security system. Manticores, standing around 3 m tall, have lion bodies and human faces. They repeat words they hear from prisoners and attack any intruder in their territory.

Blue Gorillas are also guards standing around 3 m tall. These blue-skinned gorillas, armed with large axes, patrol the prison and carry out staff orders without hesitation.

The Basilisk is even more imposing: this 20 m creature has the body of a giant lizard and the head of a chicken. Its strength and ferocity allow it to tear apart both inmates and guards.

On the first level stands the Sphinx, guardian of the Crimson Hell. Standing 30 m tall, this lion with a human face has claws and fangs capable of ripping its victims to pieces. Its personality, however, is more comical than its appearance suggests: it regularly mispronounces words and sings during its patrols.

Living Weapons, Homies, and Artificial Creations

Funkfreed is a particularly unusual living weapon. This sword belonging to Spandam ate the Zou Zou no Mi, the Elephant Fruit. It can therefore take the form of a 4 m elephant, combining a sword blade with a pachyderm’s physical strength and trunk. Its existence illustrates the unexpected uses of Devil Fruits, a subject connected to the major anime power systems.

Prometheus is one of Big Mom’s main Homies, created from a portion of her soul. In the form of a living sun measuring around 2.40 m, it produces intense heat and flames capable of setting vast areas ablaze. Completely loyal to Big Mom, it has a fiery, arrogant, and destructive personality.

On Punk Hazard, Caesar Clown created Smiley from a toxic gas weapon called H2S, then fed it the Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl. This gelatinous mass measuring around 150 m is toxic and corrosive. It can divide itself while continuing to spread its poison. After swallowing a poisoned candy, Smiley releases Shinokuni, a deadly cloud that solidifies into a petrifying substance.

These beings are not peoples in the strict sense, but they show how clearly this universe distinguishes natural creatures from beings created through powers or experiments. To better understand this diversity, also explore the races, peoples, and created beings of One Piece.

Giants Beyond Human Scale

Oars, the “Continent Puller,” is a legendary ancient giant standing 67 m tall. His body is found on Thriller Bark and reanimated by Gecko Moria using the Kage Kage no Mi, with Luffy’s shadow. That shadow gives him some of Luffy’s combat style traits, including extendable limbs. His strength is immense, but his lack of intelligence and the crew’s coordinated efforts ultimately allow them to defeat him.

The Mountain God is a white boar nearly 150 m tall that causes panic in Wano’s Flower Capital. It is searching for its child, which has been captured by residents. Kozuki Oden confronts and defeats it after using the young boar as bait.

On Fish-Man Island, Surume is a colossal 300 m octopus. Initially controlled by Hody Jones, it changes sides after Luffy learns that its brother is being held hostage.

The giant turtles seen in One Piece Film: Gold exceed 10 km in length. One of them carries Gran Tesoro on its back, making this entertainment city an independent mobile platform.

Sea Kings, Zunesha, and Oceanic Mysteries

Sea Kings are colossal marine creatures, sometimes measuring more than 5,000 m in length. They take varied forms inspired by fish, snakes, or marine mammals, and can destroy ships with ease. They notably inhabit the Calm Belt and the Grand Line.

Some Sea Kings are intelligent and can communicate with people who possess the Voice of All Things, as well as with Poseidon. Shirahoshi, the mermaid princess of Fish-Man Island, is the current incarnation of Poseidon and can command them.

Zunesha exceeds even this immense scale. This ancient elephant, 35 km tall, has walked along the seafloor for more than 1,000 years and carries the island of Zou on its back. It provides fresh water to its inhabitants through its trunk. Connected to the Kozuki Clan, it was sentenced to wander for an ancient crime and can act only when ordered to do so. During Jack’s attack, its trunk alone was enough to destroy an entire fleet.

Finally, the giant shadows of the Florian Triangle remain an enigma. These humanoid silhouettes, more than 50 km tall and concealed in the fog, have not revealed their nature. Their mere appearance reinforces the ominous nature of this area where ships disappear.
