How Luffy and Kaido Fought Like Two Pirate Kings

Warning: this article discusses major events from the Wano arc of One Piece.

The battle between Luffy and Kaido on Onigashima’s rooftop is a test of endurance, willpower, and growth. It cannot be reduced to the moment Gear 5 turns the tide: before that, Luffy falls several times, has to be saved by his allies, and gradually discovers how to hurt an opponent everyone considers nearly indestructible.

Against Kaido, Luffy is not merely fighting a Yonko. He faces a pirate capable of withstanding the combined attacks of several Supernovas, keeping Onigashima airborne, and continuing to smile amid the chaos. Yet the Straw Hat captain refuses to die, refuses to abandon Wano, and ultimately reaches a level that recalls the greatest clashes in pirate history.

Luffy’s arrival: rage before the duel

When Luffy reaches the rooftop, Kaido and Big Mom stand together. The situation is immediately unbalanced: at that point, Luffy has no reason to be able to defeat two Emperors alone. But he does not stop in front of them. He heads toward Kin’emon and the samurai, concerned first and foremost about their condition.

This scene also reveals Zoro’s constant awareness. Seeing Kin’emon’s grief, he understands that Luffy may lose his composure and is already ready to step in. Throughout much of the confrontation, Zoro is the one who protects his captain whenever Kaido appears close to winning. Their relationship also reflects the swordsman’s importance as the future Pirate King’s right-hand man, as seen in Zoro’s decision against Kuma at Thriller Bark.

Kaido quickly attacks with his club. Luffy then asks Law to move the samurai to safety, dodges the blow, and counters with Red Roc. This technique, derived from Red Hawk and enhanced by the Haki he learned in Udon, completely surprises Kaido. For the first time, Luffy truly hits him and sends him crashing into a crater.

This first blow is obviously not enough to bring Kaido down, but it changes the perception of the fight. Kaido recognizes Luffy as an unusual threat and seems to connect his potential with figures able to rival him: Roger, Whitebeard, Oden, Shanks, and Rocks D. Xebec.

Kaido displays his monstrous endurance

The beginning of the battle is a group fight. Luffy, Zoro, Law, Kid, and Killer try to chain together attacks, while Big Mom remains a constant threat. Zoro notably neutralizes Big Mom’s flames with a technique learned by observing Kin’emon, then intervenes several times to stop Kaido from finishing Luffy off.

Kaido is especially impressive because of his durability. He withstands his opponents’ attacks, first in human form and then in dragon form. Kid’s blows, Law’s operations, Killer’s assaults, Zoro’s strikes, and Luffy’s Kong Guns do not shake him for long.

Luffy uses Gear 4 and unleashes multiple Kong Rifles, but the effort exhausts him. Kaido takes advantage of this weakness, and the Straw Hat captain ends up unable to fight. Zoro then carries him away and even stops Kaido’s dragon form from devouring him. Using Santoryu, the swordsman wounds Kaido and briefly reminds him of Oden.

This resilience explains why Kaido is described as the world’s strongest creature. He does not dominate simply because he hits hard: he survives an accumulation of attacks that would have ended the fight against most pirates.

Zoro and the allies clear the way for Luffy

Onigashima’s rooftop is not a straightforward duel at first. Zoro, Law, Kid, and Killer create openings, while Big Mom forces the group to split up. Zoro even takes Kaido and Big Mom’s combined attack to protect his comrades.

After using Ashura, Zoro manages to leave a scar on Kaido. The effort leaves him completely exhausted, but his attack has a crucial impact: it proves that Kaido can be wounded and gives Luffy the time he needs to understand a vital stage of Haki.

Once Zoro is out of action, Luffy has to face Kaido alone. He can no longer count on his right-hand man to save him. This is when the true one-on-one confrontation begins to take shape.

Advanced Haki: Luffy finally begins to hurt Kaido

Luffy gradually understands how to use the Haki developed in Udon. His blows no longer depend solely on direct contact: he can strike Kaido from a distance with enough power to truly reach him. Even Law notices the gap opening between Luffy and the other fighters.

The duel becomes more even, but Kaido keeps the advantage. He sends Luffy to the ground several times and defeats him again before Luffy falls into the sea. Saved by Law’s crew, Luffy is not dead, however. Momonosuke can still hear him through the Voice of All Things, the mystery that also connects Luffy, Roger, and Oden.

After recovering, Luffy returns to the top of Onigashima carried by Momonosuke in dragon form. He then uses Gear 4 Snakeman, a form designed to multiply unpredictable trajectories and rapid strikes. Yamato takes part in the battle for a time before Luffy and Kaido are left alone once again.

Their Haki clash reaches an enormous scale. The impacts whip up the wind and shake Onigashima. Yamato sees it as a confrontation comparable to Roger and Whitebeard’s: not merely two powerful men, but two pirates whose will seems to surpass the bounds of an ordinary fight.

CP0’s intervention and the awakening of Gear 5

As Luffy plays his final card in Gear 4, he unleashes an enhanced version of Kong Gun. But a CP0 agent intervenes and restrains Luffy at the worst possible moment. Kaido then strikes him head-on, in a situation that painfully recalls his past battle against Oden.

Kaido himself is furious about this interruption. The confrontation has not reached an honorable conclusion, and the Yonko eliminates the agent responsible. Yet Luffy’s apparent defeat triggers a decisive turning point: his heart starts beating to a new rhythm, that of the drums, and Gear 5 emerges.

This form completely changes the atmosphere of the duel. Luffy becomes unpredictable, turns the ground into an elastic surface, grows to a gigantic size, and manipulates his surroundings with unprecedented freedom. His opponent, immense even in dragon form, is grabbed, thrown around, crushed, and even used as a jump rope.

Gear 5 does not make Kaido harmless, however. The Yonko withstands extraordinary blows, counters with Boro Breath and his club, and pushes Luffy to his limits. The future Emperor grows exhausted, briefly ages under the effect of his power, and then regains his Nika form.

To better understand the rules governing these clashes, this guide to the main anime power systems places Haki and Devil Fruits alongside the major battle mechanics of manga and Japanese animation.

Bajrang Gun, the blow that brings Kaido down

To end the fight, Kaido takes on a flaming dragon form, resembling a massive lava dragon. He then faces a gigantic Luffy preparing Bajrang Gun, also known as the Monkey God Gun.

The final clash is not merely a contest of strength. Kaido had stated that Joy Boy would be the one able to defeat him. In Luffy, he finally encounters that fighter: someone capable of resisting him to the end, returning after every fall, and rejecting any idea of defeat.

Bajrang Gun ultimately overwhelms Kaido. After standing against an entire alliance, enduring attacks from Zoro, Law, Kid, Killer, Yamato, and Luffy, and then facing Gear 5, the Yonko is defeated. Luffy does not win because he dominated every stage of the battle: he wins because he kept getting back up, until he became the opponent Kaido had been waiting for.

FAQ: Luffy vs. Kaido

Why does Luffy lose to Kaido several times?

Kaido possesses extraordinary endurance and power. Before fully mastering his advanced Haki and awakening Gear 5, Luffy does not yet have attacks capable of keeping the Yonko in lasting trouble.

What role does Zoro play in the fight against Kaido?

Zoro protects Luffy several times, blocks a combined attack from Kaido and Big Mom, and then wounds Kaido with Ashura. His intervention also helps prove that Kaido can truly take damage.

Does Gear 5 make Luffy invincible?

No. Gear 5 gives Luffy spectacular freedom in combat and allows him to turn many of Kaido’s attacks back against him, but it also exhausts him. Kaido continues to hit him hard and withstands the transformation for a long time.
