Maha Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter: The Mysterious Ancestor Who Fought Netero

Maha Zoldyck is undoubtedly one of the most mysterious members of the assassin family in Hunter x Hunter. He does not speak a single line, and his appearance in the manga is limited to one scene. Yet one statement from Zeno Zoldyck is enough to give him a staggering place in the story: Isaac Netero is said to be the only man who fought Maha in a duel and survived.

This statement does not make it possible to say with certainty that Maha was stronger than Netero. It does, however, place the Zoldyck ancestor among the most fearsome fighters ever mentioned. His age, his exact relationship to Zeno, and the possible identity of Zigg Zoldyck make his case even more fascinating.

Maha Zoldyck’s only appearance

The first mention of the Zoldyck family presents it as a clan of ten members: five children, their parents, two grandfathers, and one great-grandfather. The faces of these assassins are so little known that a photograph of a Zoldyck has immense value.

The oldest member appears later, in chapter 100, during the Yorknew arc. The ten Mafia Dons hire Silva and Zeno to kill Chrollo Lucilfer. At the same time, Chrollo hires Illumi to assassinate those very leaders. The Zoldycks are therefore being paid by both sides of the conflict.

When the bosses publicly announce the supposed death of the Phantom Troupe’s leader, they are already dead. Their bodies are being controlled through Illumi’s needles. Beside him stand Kalluto and a very small, bald, silent old man with a particularly striking stare. That man is Maha Zoldyck.

His name is not given in the manga at the time of this scene: it is revealed in an official databook. The databook lists him as 98 years old, 1.40 meters tall, and Zeno’s father. However, later information in the manga greatly complicates this portrayal.

Why Maha is actually older than the databook indicated

During the Chimera Ant palace invasion, Zeno takes part in the operation at Netero’s request. As Netero heads toward Neferpitou, Zeno recalls the past and identifies Netero as the only man to have fought his grandfather one-on-one and remained alive.

The term used refers to a real brawl or direct confrontation, without outside help. Most importantly, Zeno is not speaking about his father, but about his grandfather. The chapter also shows a family tree: Maha stands at the top, followed by an unnamed man, then Zeno.

This family arrangement changes Maha’s place in the lineage. He is not Zeno’s father, but his grandfather. To Killua, he is a great-great-grandfather. An entire generation—the son of Maha and father of Zeno—remains unknown.

The same family tree states that Maha is the same age as Isaac Netero. Netero was over 110 years old when he died. The databook’s claim that Maha was 98 therefore no longer matches what the manga establishes. Maha, too, is more than 110 years old, while still being involved in the Zoldycks’ lethal activities in Yorknew.

The duel between Maha Zoldyck and Isaac Netero

Zeno’s wording is deliberately striking. He does not say that Netero defeated Maha; he stresses that Netero was the only one to come out of their confrontation alive. At the very least, this suggests a terrifying reputation: as far as Zeno knows, Maha’s other opponents did not survive a fight against him.

Still, caution is necessary. The manga shows neither the duel, its context, nor its exact outcome. It is therefore impossible to officially declare Maha the fighter who surpassed Netero.

The statement becomes even more significant when Netero’s level is considered. He explains that, more than half a century earlier, he had been the world’s strongest Nen user. In old age, he believes he possesses only around half of his former strength. Even so, his Hundred-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva remains fast enough that Neferpitou cannot truly follow its movements without altering their own perception of time.

Zeno himself acknowledges that Netero has always been stronger than him. Yet, during his confrontation with Chrollo, Zeno says that he would have a strong chance of winning if the Phantom Troupe leader were seriously trying to kill him. Maha therefore stands at the top of a power hierarchy whose full outline remains incomplete.

Two fighters from the same generation and the same Nen type

The databook places Maha in the Enhancement category. This category directly improves the body: strength, endurance, and speed. Netero is also an Enhancer, giving their presumed rivalry a particularly symbolic dimension.

They would therefore have been the same age, shared the same main affinity, and fought in their youth. The fact that Maha could remain active after more than a century is consistent with the image of an extremely high-level Enhancer, whose body would remain a weapon despite his frail appearance.

This information must nevertheless be qualified: the databook has already proven inaccurate regarding Maha’s age and relationship to Zeno. At this stage, the manga does not contradict his status as an Enhancer, but neither has it explored it through a fight.

Why Maha seems separate from the rest of the Zoldyck family

During the election arc, a chart illustrates the relationships between members of the family. Silva and Zeno want to control Alluka, while Illumi wants to kill her. Killua shows closeness with the siblings he prefers.

Maha, meanwhile, appears with no line connecting him to any other Zoldyck, not even Zeno. This representation sets him apart from the family tensions. The anonymous man located between Maha and Zeno in the chapter 264 family tree does not appear on this chart either.

This absence fuels questions about Zeno’s father and his possible connection to Zigg Zoldyck, the clan member who traveled to the Dark Continent with Netero and Linnet Audoble.

Is Zigg Zoldyck Maha’s son?

One initial theory identifies Zigg as the unnamed character in the family tree: Maha’s son and Zeno’s father. In the flashback to the Dark Continent expedition, Zigg appears younger than Netero, which would fit a later generation.

This interpretation creates an intriguing continuity. Netero may have first fought Maha, then become close enough to Maha’s son to travel with him to the most dangerous place in the world. Later, Netero would once again call upon a Zoldyck, Zeno, for the operation against the Chimera Ant King.

The Dark Continent also provides a clue tied to longevity. Nitro Rice is presented as the ultimate secret of longevity. Zigg may have taken part in the expedition for a reason connected to Maha. However, nothing confirms his motivations, his fate, or the idea that he brought a calamity back to the family.

Another theory directly identifies Maha as Zigg. It is based on the fact that the name Maha comes from the databook, a possible meaning of “great,” and certain visual similarities. However, it clashes with the manga’s family tree, which clearly places a man between Maha and Zeno. The theory that Zigg is this intermediate character therefore remains more compatible with the elements shown.

Major potential that remains unexplored

Maha Zoldyck brings together several central mysteries of Hunter x Hunter: the Zoldyck family’s older generation, Isaac Netero’s past, the Dark Continent expedition, and the absence of Zeno’s father. Despite this, he has never spoken and has appeared only once.

His role is not that of a simple background character. He is one of the few known characters to have fought Netero in direct combat, and his existence connects several crucial periods of the series. If the manga returns to the Zoldycks’ secrets or the consequences of Netero’s expedition, Maha could finally become far more than a silent silhouette.

FAQ about Maha Zoldyck

Is Maha Zoldyck stronger than Netero?

The manga does not confirm this. Zeno only says that Netero is the only man to have fought his grandfather one-on-one and survived. The exact result of the duel is unknown.

What is the relationship between Maha and Zeno Zoldyck?

The databook presented Maha as Zeno’s father, but the manga’s family tree shows an unknown man between them. Maha is therefore Zeno’s grandfather.

Is Maha Zoldyck still alive?

Yes. He appears in Yorknew alongside Illumi and Kalluto while the bodies of the Mafia bosses are being manipulated. This scene is his only known appearance in the manga.

Are Zigg Zoldyck and Maha the same person?

This has not been established. One theory identifies them as the same person, but the family tree more strongly supports the idea that Zigg is Maha’s son and Zeno’s father.
