Naruto and Boruto Dōjutsu: All Eye Powers Explained

In Naruto and Boruto, dōjutsu are eye-based powers that transform perception, combat, and sometimes even the balance of the ninja world. Some are inherited through clans, others are associated with the Ōtsutsuki, while several rarer abilities belong to a single individual.

These eyes do not simply improve vision: they can read chakra, break through an opponent’s defenses, manipulate space, open dimensions, or gather information from afar. Here are the main dōjutsu and eye powers featured in the world of Naruto and Boruto.

The Byakugan: the Hyūga’s absolute vision

The Byakugan is the hereditary dōjutsu of the Hyūga clan. Its most recognizable ability is nearly complete 360-degree vision. Its user nevertheless retains a small blind spot located behind the neck.

This perception makes it possible to spot hidden enemies and traps, as well as see through solid objects. Above all, the Byakugan grants vision of the internal chakra network. Its user can observe chakra circulation and locate the 361 chakra points, or tenketsu, that regulate this flow.

This ability lies at the heart of the Jūken, or Gentle Fist. Rather than targeting only an opponent’s body, its practitioner strikes directly at their chakra system in order to disrupt or even neutralize it. Techniques such as the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms rely on a rapid succession of strikes meant to close this network.

Among the Hyūga, the Byakugan is also tied to a strict clan structure. The clan is divided between a main branch, which holds authority, and a branch family. Members of the latter receive a cursed seal in their youth: it guarantees their loyalty and seals their Byakugan upon death to prevent enemies from taking it.

Neji Hyūga is among the most talented users of his generation. His initial resentment toward the main branch stems from the treatment imposed on the branch family. To place the Byakugan more fully within the history of ninja families, see also our guide to Naruto clans, their powers, and legacies.

The Uchiha Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

The Sharingan is one of the three great dōjutsu and the Uchiha clan’s kekkei genkai. Also called the Eye of Insight or the Eye of Hypnotism, it awakens through powerful emotions connected to someone precious: the desire to protect a person, a loss, or the determination to change one’s fate.

It gradually evolves from a one-tomoe form to three tomoe. The Sharingan notably allows its user to read and predict movements, copy ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu, and cast powerful illusions. It also perceives the flow of chakra and its irregularities. Through this advanced reading of movement, its bearer can anticipate and counter extremely fast attacks.

Trauma caused by the death of a loved one can lead to the awakening of the Mangekyō Sharingan. This superior form grants techniques unique to each user, but its use damages the eyesight and can ultimately cause blindness.

The Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan overcomes this limitation by receiving the eyes of a close relative who also possesses the Mangekyō. Vision is then restored, and its techniques can be used without fear of losing one’s sight. Abilities associated with the Mangekyō include Kamui, a space-time ninjutsu; Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that traps its target in a world controlled by its user; and Susanoo, a massive chakra avatar that fights for and protects its bearer.

The Rinnegan: the Eye of Reincarnation

The Rinnegan is considered the most revered of the three great dōjutsu. Presented as a divine tool, it appears in those capable of bringing major change to the world. Its range of powers is particularly broad and notably centers on the techniques of the Six Paths.

Its wielder can manipulate gravity to pull in or repel objects. They can also instantly swap their position with that of an object or person within range. The Human Path makes it possible to extract a target’s soul to interrogate or kill them, while other abilities allow the user to summon animals, absorb ninjutsu with a chakra barrier, read memories, or repair a damaged ally.

The Rinnegan can also preserve the souls of the dead within the King of Hell in order to resurrect them later. Such power requires immense chakra reserves, both to maintain the dōjutsu and to use its techniques properly.

Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki was its first wielder. Later, Madara Uchiha awakened the Rinnegan after infusing himself with Hashirama Senju’s DNA. The power was then passed on to Nagato, while Sasuke Uchiha awakened his own tomoe-bearing version.

The Rinne Sharingan: power on a worldwide scale

The Rinne Sharingan is described as the progenitor of the Rinnegan and the Sharingan. Extremely rare, it appears on the forehead and resembles a Rinnegan marked with tomoe reminiscent of the Sharingan. It combines the attributes of both eyes and grants access to godlike abilities.

Its most fearsome power is the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu capable of plunging the entire world into a dream and subjecting humanity to an illusion. The Rinne Sharingan also opens portals between different dimensions, allowing its user to travel instantly, flee, isolate an opponent, or join allies.

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki was the first to awaken it after consuming the chakra fruit of the God Tree. She used it to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi, before the dōjutsu reappeared in the Ten-Tails connected to the God Tree. This lineage is directly connected to the history of the tailed beasts: read our guide to the nine Bijū and the Ten-Tails.

Boruto’s rare dōjutsu

Boruto Uzumaki’s Jōgan

The Jōgan, or Pure Eye, is a dōjutsu unique to Boruto Uzumaki whose origins and full potential remain mysterious. Its appearance is distinguished by a pale blue iris and a black pupil. It can perceive chakra flow, identify chakra pathways within a body, and detect invisible barriers between dimensions.

The Jōgan can also sense negative emotions and evil chakra, giving Boruto heightened awareness of hidden threats. Its connection to dimensional rifts suggests a link to the Ōtsutsuki, who can travel between dimensions. Toneri Ōtsutsuki notably emphasized its importance in one of Boruto’s dreams.

The Kokugan, Senrigan, and Tenseigan

The Kokugan is Isshiki Ōtsutsuki’s exclusive dōjutsu. This dark eye has a golden iris and pupil. It grants him access to Sukunahikona, which allows him to instantly shrink himself, as well as inanimate objects, down to microscopic size. He can also summon and manipulate large black cubes, giving him considerable mobility and unpredictability in battle.

The Senrigan is an artificial shinjutsu possessed by Eida, a cyborg created by Amado from the powers of Shibai Ōtsutsuki. This bright blue eye marked by a crescent allows its user to see and hear any ongoing event, regardless of distance or dimension. Eida can also observe the past, but only from the moment of her birth. The Senrigan cannot see the future and does not directly grant combat ability: its advantage is primarily informational.

The Tenseigan can be awakened through the combination of Ōtsutsuki and Hyūga chakra. It represents an evolution of the Byakugan, retaining its 360-degree vision and chakra perception. It adds large-scale control over attractive and repulsive forces, as well as a chakra mode that enhances speed, strength, flight, and the creation of chakra weapons. Toneri Ōtsutsuki, its known user, was capable of moving the Moon and producing gigantic energy explosions.

Other eye powers

The Ketsuryūgan, or Blood Dragon Eye, is associated with the Chinoike clan and highlighted through Chino. Its reddish appearance allows its user to manipulate the iron in a target’s blood, control their blood flow, and potentially kill them. This power can also be used to create blood weapons or illusions that are difficult to break.

Ranmaru possesses an officially unnamed ocular kekkei genkai. He can see through solid objects, detect chakra, and create illusions indistinguishable from reality, including physical manifestations capable of fighting or protecting him. Its effectiveness nevertheless depends on his frail physical condition and limited chakra reserves.

Shion’s unnamed dōjutsu gives her visions of the future, including the deaths of people close to her. These visions can be detailed but also fragmented, and the future can change through decisive actions. She can also transfer her spiritual power to other people to strengthen them.

Finally, Yome’s unnamed eye power grants her long-range sensory perception. She can locate individuals through their chakra, assess their size and strength, and perceive changes in terrain or climate. Particularly useful in the desert, this gift nevertheless requires concentration and chakra to maintain its range.
